How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work

A laser is designed to produce one or more specific wavelengths of light in short bursts. When you direct this laser beam at tattoo ink, the light passes through the skin but is absorbed by the ink. The absorption of light energy causes the tattoo ink to break into tiny particles that are then removed by the body’s natural filtering and immune systems.

The tattoo will fade gradually over a series of treatments. Treatments are spaced approximately 6 weeks apart, giving your body time to remove the distributed tattoo particles from your system between sessions.

The number of treatments required on your tattoo will depend on a number of variables (for example body placement, type of ink, colour and the age of the tattoo).

Frequently Asked Questions

These are our top list of questions that we get asked on a daily basis.

Will the Treatment Hurt?
Your laser tattoo session can cause some slight discomfort, depending on your pain threshold and the location of your tattoo. Most clients find that it’s similar to the feeling of an elastic band being flicked off your skin which is very bearable. On that note, numbing creams can be sourced from chemists or prescribed by your GP (although we don’t recommend them or feel they are needed)
How long between treatments?
We recommend a minimum of 6 weeks between treatments providing you have adhered to the proper aftercare from your Abrade Tattoo Removal laser technician
How many laser session will I need?
The number of laser treatments needed will be determined by the size, ink colour, depth and age of the tattoo. Also, each individual’s immune system will play a massive part in the removal treatment so this also needs to be taken into account. Sessions are very quick, usually less than 10mins per treatment.
Will my skin go back to normal after laser tattoo removal?
In most cases, yes. If the tattoo is heavily pigmented with many layers of ink from multiple over-ups, it can be harder to restore your skin to normal. However, each client’s removal process is different and each requires a unique laser tattoo removal plan.
